The most magnificent place Iââ¬â¢ve ever been is Puerto Rico. With its breath taking landscapes and the calm serenity of the ocean; Puerto Rico is one of the most relaxing and gorgeous places Iââ¬â¢ve ever been. The mixes of several different Latin styles play a huge role in not only the music and dancing of Puerto Rico but, also the style of the wardrobe. The best part of Puerto Rico though is the amazing experience and adventures Iââ¬â¢ve been on. Puerto Rico has some of the most beautiful landscapes Iââ¬â¢ve ever seen. They are as graceful as gazelles but as energetic as a child. Never breaking a sweat they dance until the sun comes up. The only thing thats better than the gorgeous scenery and the amazing and unique sound of Puerto Rico is the exciting activities. In Puerto Rico Ive went deep sea diving, para sailing, and hiking. When I went deep sea diving all I saw was clear blue water and gorgeous yellow and blue striped fish. There was sponge like coral. The sea went on for miles but looked like it was only a few feet deep. Para sailing was both frightening and exciting. I felt like a bird flying through the sky. The wind flew through my face as my feet glided across the water making huge ripples in the water. Hiking and sight seeing was the most fun of all. Hiking in the forest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico was an amazing experience. The forrest was covered in green leaves reaching the sky, there were stunning white and red flowers. There was no cell phone service and all I heard in the forrest was the sound of coquis singing at night. Don Zadra once said: ââ¬Å"It is more probable that your attitude, rather than your aptitude will determine your altitude in life.â⬠As we grow up we are incessantly pelted with questions of the manner ââ¬â ââ¬Å"What do you want to be when you grow up?â⬠Instead of ballerinas and pirates, we become high-achievers. We pursue the satisfaction of accomplishment in every aspect of our personhood. Therefore, our lives are entirely dependent on schedulers, cautious timing and grandiose plans whose sole purpose is to lead us to victory. In all probability we are prompted to think about our future for the first time as we enter the world of the classroom. There the nebulous concept ââ¬Å"successâ⬠takes shape. We realize that every achievement brings about merits and rewards ââ¬â a smiley face, a chocolate bar or a pound. It happens so that this makes us crave for more approval and recognition. Nevertheless, sometimes obstructions get in the way and our plans come to nothing. No one is to blame because even though we try to schedule our life and dwindle all uncertainties and ventures, we are not in charge of everything. There are factors independent of our will, power and control. We just have to grapple with them and move on. What profoundly matters in this case is your reaction and attitude to the situation. What are you going to do now that your dog has eaten your paper and youââ¬â¢ve got less than an hour to rewrite it? Some of you are deathly convinced that redoing the assignment is mission impossible. Others would settle down and deal with the task at hand ââ¬â hope of success flickering in their eyes. Everyday Use By Alice Walker Essays - Everyday Use, Maggie Greene
Everyday Use By Alice Walker "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, written in 1944, narrates the story of black family composed of a Mother and her two daughters: Maggie and Dee. Dee is the oldest one. A point that we can easily notice as the story is developed is that Maggie is extremely jealous of her sister. She believes that her sister has a better life than she does. The mother is the one that narrates the story; she makes different descriptions about both girls. The story has many examples to explain why Maggie believes that her sister has a better life. As we read the story, we can perceive that the idea of prejudice appears related to the fact that Maggie feels bad about her sister. Maggie is extremely jealous of her sister; she does not like the presence of Dee in her house. As her mother says in the story, " Maggie will be nervous until her sister goes...eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe." She believes that her sister gets everything she wants; all she needs to do is ask somebody for what she wants. She thinks that, " no is a word that the world never learned to say to her." From her point of view, Dee controls the world with her hands; she can do whatever she wants. Another example that exposes the reality of Maggie is that even her mother treats them differently. Dee is the perfect girl while Maggie is just a normal person. Her mother dreams with Dee; even in her dreams she believes that Dee is perfect. In her dream, there are only three persons: Herself, Dee, and the TV guy. "Sometime I dream a dream in which De and I are suddenly brought together on a TV program..." those were the words of her mother. Maggie's name was never mentioned in the dream. The descriptions that the mother makes of Maggie and Dee are completely different. " Dee is lighter than Maggie, with nice hair and fuller figure," said the mother. "Her feet was always neat looking..." again the mother was referring to Dee. When she describes Maggie, she uses an analogy of a lame animal. Even the memories she had from their past are different. "Sometimes I can still hear the flames and feel Maggie's arms sticking to me, her hair smoking and her dress falling off her in little black papery flakes." Those were her memories of Maggie's childhood. On the other hand, the memories of Dee's childhood were all happy. She described a scene were "Dee is standing off under the sweet gum tree she used to dig gum out of..." We can notice that even her mother treats them differently. We can perceive as the story advances that there is an idea of prejudice in the story. Maggie has motives to believe that her sister has a better life than she has. Her mother, who was supposed to treat them equally, has preference for the older girl. She has plenty of reasons to feel jealous of her sister; in her situation, most of the people would feel the same way she does.

Observation paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Observation paper - Essay Example Olive Garden has an organizational culture that emphasizes family values and continuous employee growth. Martin (2002) defined organizational culture as composed of different manifestations, including stories, rituals, practices, language, and physical arrangements (as cited in Keyton, 2011, p.20). As an employee of Olive Garden, the student has firsthand experience of what it is. In terms of stories, employees talk about their family at work and their work with their families because that is what Olive Garden wants to achieve- a sense of family bonding within the company. The organizationââ¬â¢s rituals are composed of daily operations, including keeping the place clean and homey and the guests delighted and satisfied with the service, ambiance, and food. Olive Garden wants to make guests feel that they are just dining at home, so the atmosphere is quite casual, although it has employees that serve food and take care of customers. As for the companyââ¬â¢s formal practices, empl oyees are well-trained to provide excellent customer service. All of them are hired because of their smile and ability to be patient and friendly toward customers. Olive Garden restaurants usually have good locations and tend to be jam-packed. Servers are trained to remain patient and accommodating even during these times. Informal practices include managers who check on the quality of service of employees and customersââ¬â¢ satisfaction levels and servers who go the extra mile to please clients. The jargon of the company is a mix of Italian and American words that employees use with one another. These words emphasize working together, especially during peak time. The physical arrangement of the restaurants is arranged to accommodate small and large groups, including families. The layout is spacious, and so it is normal to see young kids running around. Olive Garden is not perfect though, and it has some management problems. First, because of the ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠culture, som e managers tend to have favorites. These favorites are given more flexible (or the most sought after) schedules and busy stations where tips are most likely to be received. Second, the pay is good but not competitive and opportunities for promotion are limited. Some of those who have been loyal to Olive Garden have left because they want career advancement, but not all are given the opportunity to move up. Several think that Olive Garden is not as ââ¬Å"family-likeâ⬠as it wants to be. Some employees are not supporting each other too, so a few servers end up doing more work than others. To resolve these problems, four recommendations are offered. First, the management must lead through ensuring that the vision is alive in the company through providing fair treatment to all employees. The vision of the company emphasizes the improvement of the quality of lives of internal and external customers and this cannot be achieved when favoritism is present. Zacarro and Banks asserted t hat leaders must be able to use the organizational mission and vision for setting collection action (Gill, 2011, p.104). To influence

PAYING FOR FAILURE AT AIG Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
PAYING FOR FAILURE AT AIG - Essay Example 2. Yes, the decision of rewarding the executives was a wrong or a failure decision, as they were the ones that took the company to this stage. It was not necessary for AIG to retain those executive who were not doing well to the company. Instead of rewarding them, they should have been fired and the company should have recruited more qualified, able and committed staff that had the experience of corporate crisis management and could help company to come out of the danger zone. 3. Yes, had I been the president of AIG, I would have refused to pay bonuses to the current executive staff because they did not deserve it. Plus when the company is already incurring huge losses, rewarding them was a wrong decision to make. Moreover, rewards must always be given on the basis of performance and in this case, they did not perform well. Rewards are a sign of appreciation and encouragement for the employees. But rewarding employees when the company is already suffering huge losses is not the right policy as this would discourage others who have worked hard. In this case, the employees who are being rewarded are the ones who are responsible for the current losses of the company, and few are those who have already left the company thus that showed that they were not even loyal to the organization. 4. If I have received the bonus then I would have returned it because if I was one of those then I would know that I did not deserve to get a reward for doing nothing. I would have only accepted the reward after I could manage to get the company to come out of trouble, before that, I think I would have refused it. 5. Government should only use tax revenue to help boost the economy so that eventually it could help the common tax payers. But using that money unfairly is not just to the tax payers and economy itself. Investing money somewhere that will not directly produce any benefit to the masses is
